2007 Outreach Program - "A Great Success"
After examining and treating 3025 patients during their brief sojourn, the Guyana Watch medical team brought the curtain down on their 2007 program.
The year's outreach was described as a 'great success' by president of the organization, Mr. Tony Yassin, “providing more than US$350,000 in medication for their medical and dental clinics.”
Six clinics were held countrywide and the turnout at each clinic site was overwhelming.
At the end of the program, nine persons were identified and evaluated for heart surgery overseas.
The team visited these six areas: Timehri, Leonora, Bath Settlement, Berbice, Essequibo and West Demerara. Four children were sent for heart surgery at the Maria Fareri Children's Hospital at Westchester Medical Center in the USA. Mr. Yassin thanks everyone who assisted in the 2007 outreach, especially the doctors, the support staff, members and local volunteers. He noted that the enthusiasm, hard work and willingness of the doctors, pharmacist and staff was the major contributing factor to the great success achieved in 2007.
The organization also awarded two four-year scholarships to Berbice top performers in the CSEC examination with two years associated degree in Berbice and the additional two year degree program to be completed at the University of Guyana, Georgetown. The New York-based organization has also assisted in the development of a computer laboratory, consisting of 32 workstations, at the U.G Campus, Berbice.
Guyana Watch has been involved in Medical Outreach and in educational programs throughout the three counties of Guyana, bringing medical assistance to over 45,000 people.
They have completed over 24 heart surgeries for children overseas. GWI also brought an ophthalmology team to Guyana and completed 58 cataracts eye surgeries and has since been responsible for many more by local doctors. In 2007, the organization assisted four patients for kidney transplant surgeries which was performed in Bangalor, India.
The organization is unique in its endeavors in that 100% contribution received from its members and all others are spent on its medical and educational programs.
It is an all volunteer organization. However, five years ago GWI began paying the air fare and accommodation for the medical personnel only. GWI continues to identify and assist where health care is most needed and have financially contributed to many others that requires medical overseas intervention. Mr. Yassin added that Guyana Watch 15 years achievements can only be attributed to its small executive membership and supporters who are truly committed to the vision of humanitarian work as best defined in its credo: “The hands that serve, are blessed as the lips that pray.”
